We're 8 episodes in and there are plenty on the backend here ready to go! However, before I jump into releasing a preview of my next batch of episodes, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the work that I was able to create with my guest speakers so far. As unique and personal these narratives are, lot of the content in them are made to be relatable.
Project Voice is and will always be led by voices of Asian women living the American experience BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN that this Podcast is made to be exclusive. If you identify as an Asian/Asian American man or non-binary, a non-Asian person of color, or a human being who's interested in exploring self-identity, you are more than welcome to listen. Just because you are not part of my group of speakers, doesn't mean you can't listen or relate to our stories.
MISSION STATEMENT: Spearheaded by the voices of Asian/Asian American women, Project Voice is a podcast series dedicated to increasing visibility on issues that the Asian community has faced in the U.S. as well as providing a digital space where members can go to for guidance and resources.

NGUYEN: Hi! Welcome to Project Voice! So this is gonna be a short episode because I am the only one who’ll be speaking (LAUGHS) and yeah, this is kinda weird talking to myself, to the mic, but by the time you get to listen to this episode, it will be around mid-January. I’m actually recording this right before New Year just because I thought “Oh it’s the New Year, so why not talk about something, I don’t know, just to end the year?”
If you’re listening to this, [that] means we’re eight episodes in, which is awesome! I guess I’m not too surprised that we’ve reached eight (LAUGHS), as cocky as it sounds, but I’m so happy to hear so many people loving this project and seeing the number going up! It’s not all about the numbers but I’m glad to see that people are downloading this and listening to this. And it’s just a really good feeling to have, knowing that people are able to relate to the episodes, they’re gaining a lot out of this. And honestly, if only a handful of people are able to get something out of this, I would have been happy enough, but hearing so much feedback and encouragement is just great!
And it’s been a fun journey for me as well, and I’m actually more comfortable speaking to the mic. I’m very proud of myself for (LAUGHS) doing that. If you compare this to the first episode of me introducing the whole series, I was actually reading a script that I wrote out for that episode. I was so nervous. I hated how I spoke and I recorded that clip a million times until I felt alright about it. But now, this is… now you get to hear me unscripted. This clip will probably be a bit edited! (LAUGHS) Yeah this is… it’s funny… like I’m actually more comfortable speaking to the mic now. So I see some growth in myself, and I hope that you are growing along too with this journey of mine, with Project Voice. Wow, that sounds so cheesy! (LAUGHS)
So, I’m excited to show you more of what I have in store. There’s gonna be more guest speakers, more voices. I’m really trying to diversify the people who I have on my podcast. Yeah, that’s my number one goal and it’s always been… it’s a struggle really, finding all the voices. If I could interview everybody I knew, that would be quite a series! But we’re getting there! Just look forward to future episodes because I’m excited! Honestly, I don’t really know how long this podcast series will be, but originally I intended it to be a short-term project. If we could hit fifteen, I would be happy honestly, although I know that there are so many topics out there that fifteen makes up a small part of the whole. And we’ll see, we’ll see where it goes! (LAUGHS) I’m... looking forward to it. To me, we’re almost halfway there. So, if we hit ten, that would be great! I mean, originally, I wanted fifteen so we’re already past halfway there, but I don’t think we’re gonna stop at fifteen. I think that we can make more.
So, the reason why I wanted to have a little one-on-one for this episode is that I wanted to go back to how Project Voice got started. So I’m Asian American (LAUGHS), of course, and I care a lot about my community and I wanted to create something for a community that I care about, being a member of, so creating this podcast was perfect. It was definitely a challenge. It has been a challenge, but I love it so much and it has made me so happy being able to reach out to all these amazing people who are willing to share their thoughts on all the things that have been circulating within the Asian community, and I just want to be a part of this movement that would bring in visibility for us. And I made it specifically a series dedicated to empowering Asian women, Asian American women, because I think it’s important for us to share our voices, because oftentimes we don’t really see that much representation. We don’t see us. We don’t see our truths being spoken in the world, nor our voices being heard. So I thought that, that would allow specifically Asian women who have been through the American experience/Westernized world experience, would have a lot to say. I am so glad to see so many people supporting my idea, you know, empowering women. But at the same time during these past eight episodes, I realized that these topics are really just Asian community-centric. People of all genders who are of Asian descent, who have been through that Western world experience can relate to this, have been through a lot of issues and experiences that we bring up. So, it’s taken me a while to figure out where to go from here, the direction of Project Voice, what Project Voice is really about, who is it for. I mean I don’t think my target audience, the groups of listeners who I’m targeting my messages to, have changed. I just think that the audience is definitely wider. I don’t think the series should feel exclusive, but not just for Asian women, and it’s for people of all genders, you know. I know that a lot of guys can relate to this, too. I think this podcast series is just really about us, the voices of Asian women in the US, spearheading this movement, contributing to a community that we care about by bringing up what everyone has been talking about. And definitely having a specific group of speakers gives it a new, unique perspective, a perspective that’s also much needed. And I hope it brings light to the Asian women out there, it brings light to the fact that everyone has their own narrative, and everyone has something worthy to share. In a way, it’s kind of like rebranding this podcast. It’s not that I want to rebrand this project or anything, but I do want to clarify that it is a podcast series for anyone who can relate, anyone who has been through this experience, anyone who’s Asian, who’s Asian American, who’s listening to this and learning, and getting a sense of solidarity through this. That’s awesome! Keep following us! (LAUGHS) But I do just wanted to throw it out there before I continue with my next batch of episodes! Woo! So I guess we’ll just have to see what I have in store for all of you. I’ll send out a preview soon. We’ll see how long it goes and who knows, you know? Maybe this project will lead to another project! It’s been a huge chapter in my life, seeing me more and more involved, or seeing me more and more emotionally attached to this podcast series.
So that is all I have to say! I hope you’ll continue listening. You know you can always reach me at email@example.com or Facebook or Twitter (LAUGHS). Just throwing it all out there!
If this project can touch a handful of lives, that’s good enough for me, but I do hope that more and more of you will share this and encourage your friends and your family to tune in to this small project and learn something about themselves, learn something about their loved ones, and that is all I have to say. Well, this is definitely a different episode compared to the rest.
Tune in soon! Happy New Year!
